I recently graduated from the University of Central Oklahoma, this past December.Below is my work I created during my last senior semester. Joseph, is series of paintings for the capstone exhibition, to represent work from my collegiate career.

The explanation to my series:

Artist Statement
The concept of my current series is a narrative pattern. Each painting reflects an
important moment in the biblical story of Joseph, found in Genesis. I paint in a flat or monochromatic style, to resemble a two-dimensional fabric pattern. My method to painting is a free flowing manner, without an under painting or set sketch. I do this so that my visual interpretation of the story is fresh and unaltered.
From left to right, the first painting Joseph in the Well, is depicting the betrayal of Joseph by his brothers, after he was sold into slavery. The painting shows all eleven brothers reflecting on what they have done. The pattern of wheat and stars symbolizes a dream Joseph had at this time. The middle or second painting, Reunited, is actually the conclusion of the story. Joseph’s brothers and father are finally united after many years apart. The tear drop pattern symbolizes tears of joy and sorrow. Lastly, Joseph Interprets Dreams represents the three times Joseph interpreted dreams, twice while he was in prison, and once for the pharaoh of Egypt. The grapes, bread and wheat pattern all reflect details from the interpreted dreams.
During his life, Joseph treated others who hurt him with compassion and grace. This is why he is an inspiration to me as a person and why I choose his story for my paintings. His story transcends cultural boundaries, and teaches forgiveness.
