New work for Solo Show: El Reno, OK, Carnegie Library

I currently have a solo show at the Carnegie Library, in El Reno, OK, from Sept.-Oct., and will have another in Nov.-Dec. I created four new pieces for my solo show, and used two previous works. They located on the first floor, east side, on top of tall book shelves, by the computers. They have lots of free and inexpensive books to buy and check-out, as well as a second floor just for the children’s area!  For my second solo show Nov.-Dec. expect new dog portraits to come…and whatever I come up with ;)!

Thoughts behind the work:
Grumpers 1 and Mom, look what I found! I want to keep making these still life’s of the bird and ceramic elephant, they have got me inspired! For the grumpy bluebird, at first I was going to do this painting in “normal” colors but quickly couldn’t function like that; so I added more colors and it quickly became a fun impressionistic, Van Gough type. I’m most proud of this one. The elephant went through so many phases, he came out cute, I’m just relieved I got him finished in time for the county fair! haha

The reason behind the name for the abstract work:  Manners Matter, Politeness is in the Details, So the title is signifying, “Even though it might not look like much, look closer!” One reason, because the weaving of the paper is very subtle and even some of the intricacies of the paper layers was taken away visually, when I layered the varnish on top of the white paper it made it some what translucent. So next piece I will try a different glue and maybe not varnish at all, to keep the paper’s integrity. I really like this concept of these, but am struggling with the negative space. This time I used colored pencil to redefine the negative space with a shape outline. It’s getting there and is an improvement already in craftsmanship from the Honeycomb Dominos work, but I still haven’t nailed down the technique. Any suggestions? I really love the woven paper look though.
